My Own Branding
Hey, writers. I was in an interesting position recently. Essentially, I had to think about my brand. It felt quite… Existential.
Haha. Hit the jump and let’s discuss.
Writers, I don’t know if you’ve ever had to ask yourself what your brand is or will be one day. For instance for AlohaAlvin the website, I knew that I wanted to do a website about writing. It’s something I’m passionate about (duh), and it’s something that I thought I could shed some light on.
Today, however, I’m not talking about content per se, but instead I’m talking about how the content itself is delivered. See, I told myself that I wanted to do a site that was family friendly. And for the most part I believe I have. (By the way, if there’s anything on this site that would get a hard Rated-R or above, please let me know.)
So again, my goal was to create family friendly goodness, but then my goal (in life and in general) is to be my most genuine self. And to be honest I swear like a sailor. Legit, it’s pretty ridiculous.
I swear more before 9 a.m. than most people do all day. Okay, I’m kidding…ish.
I’ve long held the belief that if I were to be a stand-up comedian I would utilize a whole lotta profanity. Not that that would be my main appeal, but that I would not hold back. At all. Essentially that would be nighttime AlohaAlvin and the guy writing this site would be daytime AlohaAlvin.
On that note, I have to hand it to Will Smith. I remember before when he was putting out music he had lyrics that included him saying, “I’m the rapper that doesn’t swear.” The reality is that that actually did single him out. Everyone else was swearing and he was the only outlier that didn’t.
On a side note, Jin (a name that I have not heard in ages) was a guy competing in live rap battles. On the show that featured him, they stated directly that any swearing whatsoever would result in a DQ. I can’t imagine free-styling in front of judges plus not being able to swear literally once. Pretty impressive stuff.
Anyway.
I’m in a weird place.
Do I continue on the G-Rated route, do I “be myself” and swear more often, or do I assume a split personality?
Hm…
Let me know in the comments.
Aloha,
Alvin
