Lessons from an Artist

Hey, writers. There’s an artist and I don’t remember her(?) name, but I do remember being impressed by this artist. So what does drawing have to do with our writing?

Hit the jump, writers, and let’s discuss.

Professional artists, I imagine, spend their days drawing. I liken it to a very successful man that also served in the Peace Corps. Someone asked him if he wanted fish for dinner. His (all too quick) answer was that he never wanted to eat another fish for as long as he lived.  So, of course, someone asked why. And he said that he ate fish while he was in the Peace Corps. That village ate a lot of fish and he was done with it.

I imagine a professional artist, after a day of drawing would be ready to do anything but draw. So anyway, the artist I mentioned earlier? She posted an incredible drawing then there was this caption:

“Long day of drawing today. Decided to do a quick sketch.”

A few thoughts came to mind: One. Sweet crap this is a sketch?!? Two. Say that again?

You would think that a day’s worth of drawing would turn an artist into… Well, the Peace Corps fish guy.

Somersault

I will say after a long day of writing I’m down to get away for a bit. Having said that, I’m definitely not a Peace Corps fish guy. Having said that, I still think it’s healthy to maintain some distance and Sharpen the Saw (the Seventh Habit of Highly Effective People). On a more productive note, after I write I usually work on writing. In my case though, instead of going from writing to writing (like going from drawing to sketching), I do like to go from writing to planning. Going from cranking a chapter in a novel to planning an article on AlohaAlvin.com. It’s still writing but it puts a stop to the repetitive injury probabilities, and if I’m walking it gets me some fresh air. Honestly, just a case of a big win-win.

So how about you, writers?

What’s your favorite thing to do after a long day of writing?

Aloha,
Alvin
