I just finished watching Aquaman and I have to say that I enjoyed it.

Today’s review will have zero spoilers in it. Having said that, I will assume that we’ve all seen the trailer.

In case you haven’t, here it is.

Okay then.  Watched the trailer? Let’s do it.

First thing. If you are going to see the movie to see that man shirtless (I’m pointing at one particular woman I know, though I imagine we all know someone like that), then yes. There are many, many times where he isn’t wear a lot of clothes.

Ha. Moving on.

In the trailer, there are epic moments of combat. For some reason I didn’t expect to spend that much time underwater but I’m glad we did.

The water effects were beautiful as well. Logically, the water would have to look gorgeous for what they were doing. And, yes, it worked.

Okay, here’s a big one. Aquaman is Aquaman in this movie. So what does that mean? Well, there are movies where the character changes dramatically between two movies. One character, who shall remain nameless, had a super powerful accent in one movie… Then a few movies later that accent is gone. It just doesn’t make sense. (People let that slide however, and I didn’t really care.)

Anyway.

Aquaman is Aquaman. He’s the same energetic and fun guy I remember from another movie. Everything in this movie jives with a previous movie.

Also, the redheaded woman. Her name is Mera in the movie and comics and she is played by Amber Heard. I wondered how much of her we’d get in the movie and it was pleasantly a lot.

I have actually seen zero other Amber Heard stuff so I enjoyed seeing her on screen.

In retrospect, this is the poster I saw the other day. Logically, anyone that prominently featured would be a large part of the movie. So it makes sense that she was in it to the degree that I saw her.

I See Your True Colors, Shining Through

Speaking of that poster. I’m glad to see that the original Aquaman colors translated so well onto the big screen.

Too many film adaptations have colors that make the eyes bleed. There’s a difference between blood red and candy cane red, you know?

Meanwhile, the Aquaman orange and green… Don’t always translate well. Jason Momoa’s Aquaman had a chunk of orange in his armor (see poster) but it also has a golden sheen. A very nice touch.

I kissed a girl, and I liked it

In a lot of superhero action movies, there’s some kind of romance. I won’t get into any of that here as this is supposed to be spoiler free, but I did enjoy all the lovey dovey stuff in Aquaman.

Case in point, I had a friend tell me once had he thought the first Matrix movie had too much romance in it. Which still blows my mind.

Having said that, Aquaman has more romance in it than the first Matrix. I can’t explain more without spoiling it. I will say that I did enjoy the romance though.

Actually, I’ll ask.

Did you feel the first Matrix had too much romance in it?

(Personally, I feel like the love between Neo and Trinity was not developed enough in the first movie.)

Verdict

In the end, should you go and see Aquaman? That’s a definite yes from me. Fair warning though, there are chunks of violence in it.

P.P.P.P.S. The idea that Jason Momoa’s Aquaman makes that sound jumping out of an airplane is so awesome 🙂
