Superbowl Sunday

A Home for Aspiring Writers

Superbowl Sunday

Well. It’s Superbowl Sunday.

I am a New York Giants fan…and…the Giants make me sad. :’-(

Haha.

Hit the jump, and let’s discuss.

First, let’s discuss how we got here. I was cheering for the Giants…until I no longer could, then I thought I’d cheer for the Bears. That went pretty well…until I realized I couldn’t do that either. So I thought I’d cheer for the Chiefs, and hey, the Saints have a player named Alvin. Why not cheer for them?

To make a long story short (especially for the people that don’t follow football), I cheered for four different teams at one point or another and now the final two going to the Superbowl…well, I never cheered for either of them.

>.>

*SIGH*

Haha.

So what do I do in these situations? Well, I focus on cool plays and I try to appreciate the game for the sake of the game.

And now, onto some writing stuff.

Sometimes when I am surfing the web, or even reading published books, I come across a typo and then I make the decision to keep reading. To be honest, yes, at first, it’s jarring. But then I continue reading. Mistakes happen, you know?

It’s sad to me that in today’s culture it is accepted to just dump on a creator/writer over a mistake.

I’m a writer, and I have had my fair share of typos/errors/mistakes. Why would I harp on someone else?

I’m reminded of my friend’s friend a long time ago. We were out having dinner then we realized that he had lost his wallet. Eventually, we found the wallet (with money inside, which was a pleasant surprise). Then we all started discussing the good habit of checking surroundings for anything that we may have left or dropped whenever we go from one locale to another.

See, I could’ve ignored that whole incident. It wasn’t my own wallet that had been misplaced. Instead I chose to learn vicariously. Watching him, I learned from the experience.

Without experiencing it directly, I created my own system to avoid the same problem in the future.

Peanut Butter and the Truncation

I remember once Peanut Butter was reading an article and he handed me the magazine. He asked about the common ways that a writer might end an article in a magazine.

I told him that there’s often a ‘sign-off’ and that there’s usually a symbol at the end of it. He nodded his head and he agreed. As I thought, he already knew those things.

Turning to a certain page, he wanted me to confirm his suspicions. There was a large two-page spread with a very clear mid-sentence stop cutting into the bottom right of the page.

I told him that it was probably elsewhere (even though there was no See page 31 to continue), and I flipped through the magazine. The article not only didn’t have a future page reference but the end of the article was nowhere to be found in the magazine.

It was a jarring and near Twilight-Zone-level experience.

I still SMH at it.

Ha.

Anyway, when the Superbowl airs, I’m going to focus on the good stuff. I already know that my team(s) aren’t even playing so my best bet will be enjoying random cool plays.

How about you, writers?

Have you ever appreciated something while everyone else was hating on it?

Aloha,
Alvin

P.S. If you’re like me and you don’t have a team playing in the game, I hope you can enjoy the other things. I remember really enjoying the commercials from years’ past. This time around, I managed to avoid the spoilers from the news. Here’s to a good game! Cheers! 🙂
