Thoughts on the Captain Marvel Movie

Hey, writers. Today I wanted to talk about a movie I just saw. In this case it was Captain Marvel. A couple interesting thoughts to go over today.

So hit the jump and let’s discuss.

I was in the peculiar position of going to see a Marvel movie but also going in (almost) completely blind. You see I am usually the guy in the group that’s up-to-date on all the Marvel characters. Or at least, in comparison to all of my friends, that is.

Before or after a movie they would ask me my opinion. But in this case, I barely knew anything. For instance, I read a comic with Captain Marvel in it once and she did have a cat but I don’t remember if it’s name was Goose. (I later confirmed with my friend that the cat didn’t have the name “Goose.” When my friend saw the look on my face he explained that it was probably because of the movie Top Gun. Tom Cruise, the main character, had a friend named Goose. Given all the fighter planes, I admit that calling the cat by that name did make sense. Essentially Danvers loved her cat the way Maverick loved Goose in Top Gun. )

A quick aside on the X-Men movies. One, I loved Micheal Fassbender as Magneto. In the First Class movie we learned about the first team and it’s history under Professor Xavier’s guidance.

When I was talking to my friend “Moon” about First Class he mentioned that he read long ago that movie execs were debating doing a Magneto movie. In retrospect, that movie had a ton of Magneto in it. AKA, the main focus was not one of the X-Men or Professor Xavier himself.

In this case, there was a lot of not Captain Marvel in this movie. Indeed, one of the major selling points was that Nick Fury / Samuel L. Jackson was going to be in it.

Remembering my friend’s thoughts on Magneto, I have to ask myself: Was this originally a Nick Fury movie?

We learned a lot about him. For instance, we learned that despite what he says in a previous movie: “The last time I trusted someone I lost an eye.” We learn that the damage to his eye was because a cat scratched his face. That is, to put it lightly, much less cool than some kind of secret spy mission.

Having said that, whenever I have some kind of injury I like to tell people it’s because of a bar fight. Which is ridiculous of course because I don’t drink and I never fight in bars. All my combat happens via Portal Gun. (If you got that reference, hit me up in the comments. Haha.)

I have other things to say about the movie that have been covered in the How’s It Cousins podcast. You can find it on YouTube, “Episode 19: Nick Fury, When Heroes Become Timeless.”

Either way, the thought of writing an entire movie for one character then changing other key elements to the point where the titular character is someone else is an interesting exercise. Having said that, I never felt like Fury overshadowed Danvers so that was nice.

Meanwhile, I can’t stop thinking about the Black Widow solo movie now. From Thor Ragnarok and now Captain Marvel as well, I think one of my original theories sits well now: Marvel won’t do too many solo movies anymore. Kind of sad face on that one.

Not really a Jeremy Renner fan so it’ll be interesting to see how they play it out. Either way. Fingers crossed on a good movie.

*Cough* Oh yeah. The Captain Marvel movie? Pretty cool movie. I disagree with the practice of auto-hating. If you’re debating going, please check it out. I imagine it’ll be a fun ride 🙂

Do you think that this was originally a Nick Fury movie then they changed things to make it a Captain Marvel movie?  Would you have preferred that?

Aloha,
