Ant Man and the Wasp Review (no spoilers)
Hey, writers. I went into this movie worried about multiple things. I can say that those doubts were unfounded.
Hit the jump, writers, and let’s discuss.
If you’ve seen the Ant Man and the Wasp trailers, then we’re good. I’m going to reference the trailer in this post.
One of the things that I straight-up didn’t like from the Thor movies was the “Rainbow Road” (see Mario Kart) that connected distant locations. So much of Thor 1 was way, way out there for me. It was too celestial. I’m usually good at suspending disbelief when I’m watching a movie, I mean I watch things with eye lasers and flying robots. But still, Thor was a bit out there for me.
Meanwhile, in the Ant Man trailer, they mentioned the Quantum Realm. Instantly, I was reminded of the Rainbow Road. I am happy to report that, while yes, it was in the movie, it wasn’t too “much.” There’s a lot going on whenever they mentioned the Quantum Realm, but it all works out, so hey, good stuff.
Silly, Rabbit
One of the things that the Ant Man franchise is known for is silly antics. Remember, in my previous article when I mentioned superhero fatigue and the Hello Kitty Pez Dispenser? Well, as you can clearly see in the trailer, there’s definitely the Hello Kitty product flying in the movie just as the trailer. Having said that though, surprisingly that didn’t bother me that much.
Part of me wonder if I was okay with it because I was “warned” via the trailer, but who can say? Either way, it didn’t really take me out of the movie.
Also, from the trailer, the part where Michael Peña’s character Luis says the words, “We robbed you. Remember? That’s us.” That’s really silly when you think about it. A thief telling someone else, essentially reminding the victim that he was the robber, is kind of out there. But Luis and co are just as silly in this movie and for some reason…it works.
Kick Back and Relax
I’ll be the first to say that my expectations were NOT high going into this movie. Having said that, I did enjoy the movie. The heroes all “made sense” and the villains all “made sense” every scene of the movie.
All in all,
My verdict? Thumbs up.
Writers, if you don’t know what to watch the next couple of weeks, then give Ant Man and the Wasp a try. It’s 100% kid-friendly, and it’s still fun for adults.
Aloha,
Alvin
