Hey, writers. I recently saw the movie Glass and I had a good time with it.

Hit the jump, and let’s discuss.

Let’s start with the trailer.

(For the record, I saw Split (2017) then I saw the trailer for Glass (2019) then I saw Unbreakable (2000). And most recently I saw the movie Glass (2019).

The trailer for Glass showed Casey Cooke played by Anya Taylor-Joy. Once I saw her I wondered what she would be doing in this movie.

While watching Glass, I was also confused when she spoke with James McAvoy’s character.

Then they showed that her goal was to talk to one of the personalities. And just like that it all made sense. Imagine caring about your friend so much that you would meet with Hannibal Lecter himself to get a message to your friend. That’s quite a statement on Casey Cooke’s character.

I also liked the touch-to-make-a-true-connection thing. I also liked that it was only Anya Taylor-Joy that could do it.

For instance, if Doctor Ellie Staple (played by Sarah Paulson) could touch The Beast and calm him down it wouldn’t have worked in my head.

Given her numerous and important actions in Split, I was surprised to see her clumped with the son of Bruce Willis and the mother of Samuel L. Jackson.

Then again, the groupings make sense in that she wasn’t a “superhero” or a “super villain” in this movie.

I was surprised to see her in the trailer. But once I knew she was in the movie, I wanted more from her. Regardless, it was a solid performance from Anya Taylor-Joy.

Seven Years Bad Luck

Alright, I’ve saved the best for last. James McAvoy’s performance, once again, blew me away. Holy smokes. (I loved him in Split and I loved him in this.)

Total transparency here, he is/was the reason I went to this movie. His Patricia (the headmistress and only female member of the Horde) was spot on once again. The eternal nine year old Hedwig was good, too. I remember chuckling and loving the end credits. From The Beast to Dennis to Barry to Patricia, there’s a huge chunk of blank space next to those names. Normally a 1:1 ratio, all these names are instead linked to one actor.

Pretty dope, Mr. McAvoy. (For the record, I think it’s listed as 24 personalities in Split.)

Writers, if any of you are debating going to the movie and the only reason you buy a ticket is to see this man act? Then it’s money well spent.

Pyrrhic

There was a comment made in the movie. It seemed like members of the Horde could kill each other. I am absolutely not a multiple personality disorder expert and I’ll say that the idea of adding or removing personalities is interesting to me, as a writer.

Certain thoughts come to mind.

Like, “Why those 24 personalities? Were those the most harmonious personalities?” Or, “Were there previously X + Y personalities and all the Y personalities were killed off by the remaining X?” And, “If the stronger willed personalities have plans they’re mobilizing on… Why let Hedwig out to play at all?”

So many possibilities…and so masterfully portrayed.
